Buy American this Black Friday
Our Buy American Mention of the Week!
by Roger Simmermaker
November 25, 2009

Everything we bring to the table this Thanksgiving can be "made in USA" from the plates and glasses, to the silverware, cookware, candles, and coffee. Here is how we can make our Thanksgiving Day table a cornucopia of American-made products.

Even the clothes we wear and bring to the table with us can be American-made. Even though 96 percent of the clothes we buy in this country is imported, everything we wear every day can be "made in USA" if we know where to find that 4 percent that is made here.

  • American-made and union-made pants, jeans, and shirts from All American Clothing Company at www.AllAmericanClothing.com.
  • American-made shoes from New Balance or SAS (San Antonio Shoes).
  • American-made, union-made boots from The Union Boot Pro at www.theunionbootpro.com.
  • American-made underwear by Wickers at www.wickers.com.
  • American-made, union-made socks from Wigwam at www.wigwam.com or retail stores like Dick's Sporting Goods.
  • American-made belts, wallets, purses, and other leather accessories from New York-based Leather Artisan at www.leatherartisan.com.
  • American-made sweaters for men and women from www.MadeinUSAForever.com.

Among many other things this Thanksgiving, we should be thankful we can still buy American while there's still American left to buy and support our fellow American workers, who we hope can be thankful they still have jobs. American workers are the only workers that pay taxes to the US Treasury. Only by supporting and protecting good, middle-class jobs that pay good, middle-class wages can we pay for the things "we the people" have demanded from our government through the use of our tax dollars.

But of course we don't have to stop buying American at Black Friday. Christmas is just around the corner. Some of the best ways to buy American and put American-made presents under your American-made artificial tree from www.USChristmasTree.com can be found at the top of my home page at www.howtobuyamerican.com.

Some of these patriotic small businesses I've already mentioned are www.AllAmericanClothing.com where you can find great, quality, American-made clothing and accessories for both men and women; Online superstore www.MadeInUSAForever.com where you can browse all kinds of American-made goods from books, bicycles, and bedspreads to wallets and wooden toys; and www.theunionbootpro.com where you can find great shoes and boots at great prices.

But you should also check out sites like www.AmericasVirtualGeneralStore.com where you'll find all kinds of apparel, arts & crafts, pet supplies, and items for the home and for your body; www.VersaTables.com where you'll find American-made computer furniture (with a lifetime warranty); www.buytankless.com where you'll find American-made electric tankless water heaters by Hubbell; or www.AntonelaArt.com for fine art to deck your walls.

Another great online store is www.MadeInUSAProductsStore.com where you can help "buy America back" by shopping for American-made automotive accessories, tools, outdoor products (sports and furniture) and other great gift ideas; www.wigwam.com where you can find all the best socks that are neat for your feet; www.AmericanAisle.com where you can feel like your actually strolling down an aisle of all American goods; or www.konaschips.com where you can find safe and healthy treats for your pet that are not made in China (they're made right here in the U.S.)

Of course a great American-printed book to buy is How Americans Can Buy American, but another great book is by my good friend Michele Nash-Hoff titled Can American Manufacturing Be Saved.

If you're like me and like to support union labor, then check out www.USACoffeeCompany.com where the coffee is 100% American from tree to cup, or www.theUnionShop.org and www.UnionHouse.com where there are more union-made goods to choose from than I could possibly list in a single article.

If you've got American-made furniture on your mind, there's no better place to see it than at Home Furniture in my home state of Florida. Check out www.homefurniturefl.com if you're in the area and they'll ship just about anywhere in central Florida.

You can also support a supplier of fine civilian and military apparel by visiting www.CockpitUSA.com and find great ladies shirts at www.Eagles-way.com.

With all these great choices, there's almost no excuse for not putting all American-made gifts under your American-made tree this year. Let's be happy we can still buy American at Christmas this year, and keep that option alive for many Christmases to come by buying American and putting America back to work.
